William J. White has been a Professor in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois since January 1998. In 2004, White was named one of two winners of Northwestern University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also received an Outstanding Teacher Award from the Association of Student Government in 2004 and 2000. In 2001 he was named McCormick professor of the year.
He also teaches at the distinguished Kellogg School of Management, which in 2004 was rated the top business school in the country by BusinessWeek Magazine.
He has consulted with companies such as Nationwide Insurance and Motorola.
White has been quoted in the media, and was featured in a December 1, 2003 USAToday article, “CEOs of the future get formal training to take giant leap.”
Mr. White served as Chairman of the Board of Bell & Howell Company from 1990 through 1997. He was Chief Executive Officer until February 1997 and President until February 1995. Previously, he had served as Chairman and President of Whitestar Graphics, Inc.
Before his association with Whitestar in 1989, Mr. White was Executive Vice President and a Director of USG Corporation, as well as President and Chief Executive Officer of its largest subsidiary, United States Gypsum. His affiliation with USG began when that corporation acquired Masonite Corporation. He joined Masonite in 1981 and served as President and Chief Operating Officer until its acquisition by USG.
Prior to joining Masonite, Mr. White spent seven years with the Mead Corporation in Dayton , Ohio. During that time he served as President of Mead Products Division and ultimately, as Group Vice President of Consumer and Distribution.
Previously he was with Hartmarx Corporation in various operating positions, including Executive Vice President of the Gleneagles Raincoat Division and Corporate Vice President of Manufacturing.
Mr. White is an Industrial Engineering graduate of Northwestern University and he received an MBA degree from Harvard University. He co-authored Creative Collective Bargaining, published by Prentice Hall in 1965.
He has been the Chairman of the Advisory Council of the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University. He is past Chairman of the Business Advisory Council at the University of Illinois at Chicago. For several years he was a visiting professor at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He is also past Board Chairman of the Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the following companies: Masonite Corporation, Harris Bank, Materials Science Corporation, TJI Company, Ivex Packaging Corporation, USG Corporation, Reader's Digest Association, Forest One Corporation, and Packaging Dynamics Corporation.
In addition, he has served as a Trustee of the following non-profit organizations: The Field Museum, Chicago Stock Exchange, Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy Foundation, Northshore University Health System, and Northwestern University.
He is also currently a Non-Executive Chairman of Context Media Company.
He has been an advisor to and an investor in multiple startups.
